ashrita-portugal-underwater-bike.jpg

Ashrita is best known for holding the Guinness World Records for the most Guinness World Records

In this photo, Ashrita is setting the Guinness World Record for furthest distance cycled underwater! Ashrita took three hours to cycle three kilometres and 37 metres. (GWR)

In 1978, Ashrita cycled 405 miles during the Pepsi 24 hour cycle challenge around Central Park. This distance was achieved despite only starting to train a few months before, and inspired him to go out and break Guinness World Records to show the power of meditation and spirituality. He finished 3rd in the race.

Members of Sri Chinmoy Cycling Team.

The Sri Chinmoy Cycling Team have members from all around the world. Members compete in both races and social bike rides. They are also involved in organising triathlons and other types of races, including time trials in the UK.

One of the principles behind the Sri Chinmoy Cycling Team is to aim for the concept of self-transcendence - the effort to transcend previous bests - though both physical, mental and spiritual endeavours.

Sri Chinmoy is a spiritual teacher who advocates physical fitness as a means to self-improvement. In an article 'On the significance of cycling' he notes that: "While we are cycling, we are reminding ourselves of evolution, of how the world is evolving in cycles." - and this evolution is part of the long process of individual self-transcendence and self-discovery.

In the 1970s, many members of the Sri Chinmoy Cycling Team participated in the 'Pepsi' 24 hour bike races around Central Park, New York, including team founder - Sri Chinmoy. With 197 entrants, they were the largest team, logging 38,605 miles in total. In the mens event, Ashrita Furman finished 3rd with 405 miles (on little training). In 1978 Pragati won the womens event.

In recent years, members have taken part in a popular 'Sri Chinmoy Cycling Challenge' during the month of June, which involves cycling as many miles as participants can. Members have also taken part in several races - both on the road and triathlons.

In the UK, Tejvan Pettinger has had success in domestic UK time trials, including winning the National HIll Climb Championship 2013 ,and 2nd place in national 12 hour TT (284 miles).

tejvan-askwith.jpg

After joining the Sri Chinmoy centre in 1999 I tried running for a while, but a knee injury encouraged me to return to the bike. By 2004 I started racing for a local club Oxonians CC. My first race was a 10 mile TT, I finished 4th in a time of 24.12.

My first season of racing was encouraging and so at the end of the year a friend in the Sri Chinmoy Centre suggested setting up the Sri Chinmoy CT in the UK and so since Jan 2005 I have been racing for Sri Chinmoy CT. During 2005 I have won quite a few events. and also had a 3rd Place in a National Time Trials Series and 4th in the National 100. I won the National Hill Climb Championships in 2013 and finished second in the UK 12 Hour Championships in 2016.

As a student of Sri Chinmoy, meditation is an important and integral part of my life. However as well as meditation Sri Chinmoy emphasises physical fitness as being beneficial for a spiritual life. Therefore Sri Chinmoy encourages activities such as running and cycling. As well as cycling I help to organise running races at Cutteslowe Park in Oxford.
